Chaat is a very special snack item for Indians; it is typically a vegetarian preparation, you can easily make it vegan, if you don’t use yogurt. Chaat is prepared and eaten in all parts of India, but our capital city Delhi takes all the attributes. Delhi ki chaat is famous not only in India, but worldwide. No Kidding. Although, my Aloo Chaat recipe today is not really an authentic Delhi ki chaat; it’s a basic, all purpose one you can say.

I also use tamarind chutney in this recipe as topping. You can also use green dhaniya ki chutney.

Whoever said healthy food is boring food, can dig into some chaat, and then repeat the sentence! Chaat is an innocent and healthy food, yet it is one of the most fun filled street foods, with a tangy twist. It can go well as a party snack, after school snack, or surprise guest snack. Potato is seen as a culprit of carbs, while on the contrary, it is actually a complex carbohydrate that is rich in nutrients. Potatoes can be very good stress busters, with its Vitamic C and fiber content. However the starch content makes it troublesome for diabetic patients. Try to avoid too much fried potato.

 

Whenever we say evening snack, the back of an Indian person’s tongue craves that tingling feeling, asking for something spicy and tangy. Now spicy doesn’t always mean too much chilies or a host of spices. Indian food is all about the right blend of spices, to create the most enjoyable zing. I am using cumin powder, black salt and tamarind, together with coriander. So see, it doesn’t always have to be too much spice or ingredients to create a tangy spicy dish, it’s all about the right mixture. Aloo chaat, a Lip smacking Snacks recipe is basic and quick, even children can make it.

Do you know there are about 11types of potato in India? New potato and chandramukhi potato are the most popularly known. If you are making aloo chaat, then you would want your spices to really penetrate inside the potato. Consider the all purpose white potato that has a soft and smooth peel. These potatoes have has medium starch and a creamy, dense texture. The tamarind will penetrate well and your chaat won’t taste watery.

Aloo chaat is an enjoyable evening snack to go with tea and coffee. It is also light snack that does not stuff your appetite before dinner. Important note, when mixing the spices with the potato, make sure the potato is in room temperature. However, avoid using refrigerated potatoes, bring it to room temperature and then mix the spices, so that the taste penetrates the potato.

Ingredients

  • 7-8 pieces baby Potatoes boiled and peeled
  • 20 gm Tamarind
  • ½ tsp black salt
  • Salt to taste
  • 11/2 tsp cumin powder
  • ¼ tsp red chilly powder
  • 2 pieces green chilly chopped
  • coriander leaves Freshly chopped

Instructions

  • Cut boiled potatoes into round shape. Do not cut very thin it should be slightly thick.
  • Soak tamarind with enough water for 30-40 minutes.
  • Mash it entirely with the help of hands or spoon and strain, pressing the tamarind into the strainer with the help of spoon so that all the pulps get removed.
  • Tamarind pulp is ready.
  • Put cutted potatoes in a bowl and put all the spices and tamarind pulp. Mix it until well combined.
  • Garnish Aloo Chaat with coriander leaves or mint leaves and serve.

Potatoes should be completely cool down before making Aloo Chaat. If you take hot potatoes for stuffing it will get break.
